This is a fairly simple way to clean a filter,an essential part of motocross maintenance, although other riders prefer to use different methods. You will need to remove the seat from your machine, which will give you access to the airbox. Remove the filter and place it in a bucket. Once in the bucket you can either fill it with hot soapy water, or filter cleaner (make sure you get yourself some latex gloves). Filter cleaner is the wiser option, but some prefer to use hot and soapy, mainly because it's cheaper!

This can be a time consuming part of motocross maintenance, but don't get despondent, it has to be done! Make sure you remove all dirt and oil particles before washing through with cold pure water, and let it dry COMPLETELY. This is essential, if you install a wet filter to a machine, the suction from the engine may drag the water particles through causing top and bottom end damage.

Once the filter is dry, you have two options; spray on air filter oil or conventional oil. Which ever way you coat your filter with oil, always make sure you allow the filter to dry for a while, as excess oil could block jets in your carburettor, causing engine failure.

Important motocross maintenance Points:

Some riders prefer to use petrol. While this is an excellent way to get rid of dirt and grime quickly, the chemicals in petrol can destroy the seams of glue, which can allow dirt particles in and therefore, leaving your engine exposed.

Some riders like to use a coat of grease to seal the filter to the airbox. This is actually something I do myself, as I take no chances. You can use grease made for this exact purpose, or any general grease, just apply a small amount around the rim of the filter and it should create a perfect seal.

Oiling filters is a messy job, but a well worth while part of motocross maintenance. Its wise to try and do a bulk load of filters in one go, once they are done, wrap them up in plastic bags, so you can change the one fitted to your motocross bike quickly, if you hit an extremely muddy or dusty track.

*Do not attempt to start or ride your motocross bike without oiling your air filter. Without oiling your filter, you have not completed the above steps of motocross maintenance. The oil acts like a spiders web, catching all particles that may damage your engine, by running your bike without oil, your running the risk of damaging your engine.*

If a toilet has become damaged or is overly inefficient, then it is time for a new model that is water responsible. Toilet replacement can be broken down into three main tasks: Removal of the old toilet, the removal and replacement of the wax ring and the installation of the new toilet.

There are several types and models available for your new toilet, so be sure to properly research the best kind for your needs. There are models that are all one piece, but most likely you will need to purchase the base and tank separately. If the tank does not come with all of its working parts, then you will also need to purchase the flush valve and fill valve kits. You will also need to buy the wax ring kit to seal the base to the sewer line. This kit should include the mounting bolts but you will also need to buy the finishing caps that go over the anchor bolts. You will also want to purchase a cement mixing tub to aide in the removal of the old toilet. If the water supply valve on the old toilet is damaged or has rust, you should consider replacing it along with the toilet tank hose.

Toilet replacement tools needed are: an adjustable open end wrench or socket wrench, large flat head screwdriver, mini hack saw, disposable plastic scraper, plastic trash bags, paper towels, latex gloves and a utility knife or box cutter.

Remove toilet by turning off the water supply valve and remove lid to the toilet tank. Flush the toilet to alleviate any water pressure and disconnect the water supply valve hose from the fill valve shank.

Remove the plastic mounting bolt caps from the base and unscrew the lock nuts holding it to the floor. You may need to use the mini hack saw to remove the bolt if the threads are stripped or if the bolt is corroded. Score any caulking around the base of the unit with the utility knife, then position the cement mixing tub close to the base of the toilet and once the bolts are removed, lift with your legs to remove the toilet unit from the floor and place in the plastic tub.

To remove the wax ring, put on latex gloves and have trash bags and paper towels at the ready. Use the plastic scraper to remove the wax from around the ring, wiping it onto the paper towels and throw the wax away. Next, use the scraper to pry up the rubber lip of the wax ring and throw it away. Remove the bolts from the sewer flange and throw those away as well. Clean up any remaining wax with the scraper and paper towels. This should render the opening free from just about all wax and any debris.

If there is going to be a delay in toilet replacement from old to new - you can create a plug for the sewer line hole by partly filling a plastic trash bag with some paper towels, wadding it up into a kind of stopper and then plugging the hole. This will keep most of the gases from the sewer line from entering the house. Remove the plastic bag stopper before installing the new toilet. Be sure to inspect the sewer flange for any damage before toilet replacement continues. If there is any damage, it will need to be repaired first.

Follow the directions on how to install the wax ring. Center and adjust the ring as needed into the sewer flange. Now install the mounting bolts into the guides along the edge of the flange and make sure they are perpendicular. Place the unit over the wax ring and pass the bolts through the mounting holes on each side of the base. You should feel the wax ring compress around the toilets drain pipe as you push down to seal it.

Take the plastic finishing washers and install them as directed onto the anchor bolts, properly tightening the bolt to secure the base to the floor, making sure the toilet does not move at all. You can then trim the bolt to a ¼ inch above the nut with the mini hack saw, covering them with the finishing caps.

Now you can install the tank according to the directions and hook up the water tank hose and water supply valve again. When this is done, you can turn on the water supply valve and allow the tank to fill with water. Watch for leaks and adjust the water level. Install the seat and your toilet replacement is complete!

Unfortunately, accidents can - and DO happen, so it's always a good idea to be prepared! While accidents usually produce obvious injuries, illnesses are often kept well hidden by birds. In nature, if you're sick you pose a threat in making your whole flock vulnerable to predators, so parrots have become adept at masking signs of illness. This is one reason that it's vital to have a "well bird" check-up annually. Needless to day, once a bird is showing obvious signs of illness, he's often very sick and needs immediate vet attention. First Aid is intended to help you get by until you can see the vet, or in treating minor injuries.

It's helpful to have a "hospital cage" for emergencies - a smaller, easily portable cage where you can isolate a sick or injured bird and easily move him to a warm, quiet, area of your home. It's advisable to have a quarantine area as well - for new birds coming into the home, as well as sick birds recovering from an infection. This area should be well separated from the rest of your birds to prevent air-borne transmission of germs, as well as those spread by direct contact.

Some of the signs of possible illness include: more time on cage floor, talking and playing less, fluffed feathers, lack of appetite, drinking more water, personality changes (such as becoming bitey or not wanting to come out of the cage), tail bobbing, puffy eyes, sleeping on both feet with head tucked, droopy wings, sneezing or coughing, "clicking" in chest, vomiting, diarrhea, soiled vent, etc. I won't go into specific diseases here, but hopefully you get the general idea - if things are "different," get to the vet! Other problems include broken blood feathers or egg binding.

· Betadine or iodine swabs

· Adhesive tape

· Penlight

· Heating pad and/or lamp

· Hydrogen peroxide

· Pedialyte (Electrolyte solution for babies)

· Hand feeding formula and syringes

· Phone number for vets and poison control

Generally, with any illness or injury, remove the bird to a hospital cage and put him in a warm, quiet, dimly lit room (bathrooms can work). Provide fresh water (and Pedialyte if needed). Feed favorite foods (healthier things you know he'll eat) plus warm foods like cooked rice or oatmeal. IN addition, spray millet is often enjoyed by smaller birds. If he's not eating well on his own, offer some warm food with your fingers or a spoon. If need be, you may have to mix up hand feeding formula and give by cup or syringe. If you've kept your bird in the habit of eating from a spoon or cup, this will be easier. DO NOT use over the counter remedies from pet stores. It's too much of a guessing game. I know a Pionus who became psychotic after being given an OTC bird "remedy" and would not stop thrashing around her cage. A little chamomile tea can help the bird relax and ginger tea is good for digestive upsets. If you're familiar with herbal remedies, you can safely
use those without causing harm to your bird. NEVER give antibiotics without knowing your bird actually has a BACTERIAL infection (and which bacteria!)

Broken blood feathers (or those accidentally clipped) can be hard to stop bleeding. Do not use styptic powder on skin or soft tissue - only on bleeding nails. Otherwise, use corn starch as a coagulant. If the blood feather (immature feather with live blood supply) won't stop bleeding, it has to be pulled or the bird can bleed to death.

A note on egg binding: If a hen is on the cage bottom, fluffed up and straining, she may be "egg bound". Put her in a warm, humid place (like the bathroom). You can rub some vegetable oil around her vent. Egg bound hens can die fairly quickly, though, and if the egg does not pass within several hours, she needs to get to the vet immediately (a good diet with extra calcium will help prevent this.)

So get in the habit of inspecting your birds on a daily basis, and being alert for signs of distress. Read up on diseases and gain a basic knowledge of illness in birds. "Bird proof" your home, avoid toxic fumes and unsafe toys. Have a first aid kit and hospital cage available. No what's "normal" for your bird and act quickly if things don't seem right. Find a good AVIAN vet and see them annually. Be sure your house and your bird's cage and play areas are as safe as possible. Feed the best diet you can to ensure your birds best possible health. Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) is made from the latex that is extracted from actual rubber trees (Hevea Brasiliensis) most commonly found in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. It is usually the elderly people who are prone to develop the problem of 'overflow incontinence' consequent upon the enlargement of their prostrate glands. It so happens that when the prostrate gland (which encircles the urethra at the outlet of the bladder) gets enlarged, it depresses the urethra and thus hinders the free outflow of urine from the urethra. As the obstruction becomes more acute, a condition develops in which not all of the urine is emptied from the bladder at the time of voiding. When such a condition of obstruction progresses, there comes a time when the person can no longer empty his bladder at all. The bladder continues to fill, producing distention and considerable discomfort. This type of complete urinary retention constitutes an emergency. A bard catheter is, therefore, inserted into the bladder through the urethra to drain away the impounded urine and thereby provide immediate relief to the patient from an otherwise grave situation.

Self-catheterization:

In an emergency situation, when the availability of a doctor or trained professional poses another problem, it is possible to use the catheter by yourself to draw out the accumulated urine from the bladder. However, the following things must be procured before beginning the operation:

i) A bard catheter-it is available in both latex and non-latex variety because some people are allergic to latex.
ii) Drainage bag-for receiving the urine drawn from the bladder.
iii) Sterile lubricant-for lubricating the tip end of the catheter.
iv) Elastic leg strap-for strapping the drainage bag to your leg.
v) Genital cleansing solution.
vi) Irrigation syringe-for filling the balloon at the tip of the catheter with distilled water.

Anti-bacterial soap, medical tape, paper towels and sterile gloves may also be kept handy.

Step by step procedure:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly with anti-bacterial soap.
2. Dry your hands with clean towel and put on the sterile gloves.
3. Fill the irrigation syringe with 10 cc of distilled water for later use.
4. Lubricate the tip of the catheter to a few inches below-with sterile lubricant.
5. Get yourself comfortably seated. Note that you should be able to spread your legs with ease.
6. Clean your genital area meticulously with genital cleansing solution.
7. You may then start inserting the catheter into your urethra-gently and slowly.
8. When the catheter has reached the outlet of the bladder (sometimes called the neck of the bladder), you may then inject distilled water into the small tube at the upper end (which is also the drainage end) of the catheter. This is to inflate the balloon at the tip of the catheter. The inflated balloon is meant to keep the catheter firmly in place.
9. Gently tape the upper end of the catheter to your body so that any unnecessary movement may be avoided.
10. Attach the drainage bag to the upper end of the catheter and strap it to your leg with the help of the elastic strap.

Post-insertion Precautionary Measures:

It is advisable for those using bard catheters to ensure sufficient intake of water or fruit juices daily. Minimum 8 ounces of water - every 2 to 3 hours is recommended. Sufficient daily intake of fluids is essential for: making the urine dilute and keeping the catheter drained at all times. Catheter users are also advised to avoid taking Tea, Coffee, Alcohol, and even soft drinks-as these drinks might irritate the bladder and aggravate the situation.

In order to give you some idea of the process involved in making a rubber or latex mold, here is a quick rundown.

Part 1 - The easy part, decide what it is you want to copy or make your mold of and get one.

Part 2 - This is the long part. It could take 5 or 6 days if you are only able to paint a couple of times a day. You cover your original - lets say it is a frog - with release agent. You may not always have to do this. Some plastics and resins do not need it. Now paint the frog with the rubber paint. Let it sit until it is almost dry - you can put your finger on it and no paint sticks to your finger. Paint it again and again. Do this until you have built up a thickness of about 3/16" or so. You can judge this by painting a piece of wood or something every time you apply a coat to the frog. Look at the wood to see how thick your test paint is.

Part 3 - After the paint has dried for 2 or 3 days you can start to make the support for the rubber mold. If you can picture the mold as a rubber glove, when you fill the glove with water it will stretch. You have to stop the stretch. Most of the time this is done with a fiberglass case or backing that you will make to go over the mold. You may have to make this case in 2-3-4-5 or more pieces that will bolt together. This is so you can take the case off easily. If there are a lot of undercuts in your frog then chances are your case will be several pieces. You can avoid having a lot of pieces by filling undercuts on the outside of your frog before you start to make the case. This means more time painting on the rubber paint. This is a good thing because the fewer pieces in the case the easier it is to use. When you make your case it has to have a good big base, it will be holding the rubber mold upright when you fill it with concrete. You don't want it to fall over just when you get to the top!

Part 4 - Take the rubber off the original. Be careful! It will be inside-out. Now you can sprinkle a little talc on it and turn it inside-in. Put it into the fiberglass case you made, bolt or clamp the case closed, invert the case so that it is sitting on that big base we where talking about. Mix your concrete and fill the mold. Let it sit to cure for a couple of days. This is the test run for this mold and case so you want the concrete extra hard when you do your first de-mold.

Part 5 - Unbolt the case and take out your casting. Carefully take the rubber mold off the casting. If you are a skilled mold maker it should be right the first time!! If not you need to look at any problem areas and decide what you can do to correct them.

Now you can see why the rubber or latex molds cost so much and why they take a couple of weeks or more to make.

The building time can be shortened by using fast drying silicone based rubber, it is a little more expensive but.... Plaster can be used instead of fiberglass if the mold is not going to be used a lot. This is cheaper but not nearly as good as fiberglass.

My thought is that for a person to start into the casting business the best way is to start with a few plastic molds - no fiberglass backing needed - do a few pours and see if you want to keep at it. If you decide you do, then as your skills increase, start to think about investing in a simple latex mold. You may be able to find a used one in good shape. Try it and see if you want to do that type of casting.

The results are great once you have mastered the process but it is not a cheap or easy thing to do as a novice.
